Kashmiri Papier-Mâché: Mughal Luxury, Gold Leaf & Naqashi Mastery

Brought to the Kashmir Valley in the 14th century by the Sufi saint Mir Sayyid Ali Hamadani and popularized under Mughal emperor Zain-ul-Abidin, Kashmiri Papier-Mâché represents the zenith of hand-painted decorative luxury.

Two Sacred Disciplines: Sakhtsazi & Naqashi

  • Sakhtsazi (Form Sculpting): Waste paper is soaked in water for weeks, mashed into a fine pulp, blended with rice starch paste (*Atte ka Lehi*), molded into plates, boxes, or vases, and dried under shade.
  • Naqashi (Miniature Painting): Master painters apply coats of chalk primer (*Gach*), sketch intricate Persian arabesques, birds of paradise (*Bulbul*), and Chinar leaves, and finish with pure 24-karat gold leaf work (*Tala-Kari*).

Protected by high-gloss amber varnish (*Kahruba*), a genuine Kashmiri papier-mâché piece retains its radiant jewel-like colors for centuries.
